Round 1 - 7th/8th November 2009
Longley
Cricket Club recorded one win from three matches this weekend,
with C grade having the bye first round.
In
A grade at Margate, Longley scored 170 runs batting first with
Matthew Taylor, in his first game for the club, scoring 51 and
being the stand out with the bat. Franco Lenhardt (22), also
playing his first game, Andrew Fenton (26) and Michael Pearce (19)
provided support with some useful scores. The moderate total
was always going to be tough to defend, and Margate scored the
runs in the 32nd over with 4 wickets in hand. Matthew Taylor
followed up his efforts with the bat to also take the bowling
honours for the side taking 2-35 from his ten overs, with Chris
Machin also making some inroads with 2-36 from seven overs. There
were encouraging signs from the match, with some steady batting
down the order, going close to batting through the 50 overs. The
goals for the side in coming weeks will be to form significant
partnerships and to bat through the entire 50 overs to make the
most of the scoring opportunities. The players should all look to
take positives from the game, improve on them in coming weeks, and
we will certainly be looking to put a few wins on the board soon.
Longley
hosted the B1 Margate team and squared the ledger between the two
clubs for the weekend, recording a solid win. Batting first
Longley scored 9-217 from their 50 overs, with Luke Bartulovic
(60) and Charlie Schreuder (48) providing the backbone of the
innings, sharing a 92 run partnership for the 3rd wicket. Caden
Wilson (31*) provided some excitement in the final seven overs to
give a handy boost to the total and take it over the 200 mark.
This was a good effort in the first match of the season, and a
defendable target if we followed it up with disciplined bowling
and taking opportunities in the field when they presented
themselves. The bowling component of this formula was provided
with all bowlers taking at least one wicket and creating
opportunities regularly. Caden Wilson showed his all-round
ability, taking the new ball and bowling ten overs without a break
all the while looking as fresh as his first ball and picking up
3-41 to back up his performance with the bat. The pick of the
bowlers however, statistically at least, was Damien Bradburn
coming on at the 16th over and cleaning up the innings with 4-5
from 5 overs. Some excellent performances both with bat and ball
from a number of the B1 players will be putting some healthy
pressure on the senior team which is a fantastic result and
exactly what the club expects from the number 2 side.
Our
B2 team played at Snug, and struggled against a stronger opponent,
scoring 110 all out in the 47th over. Greg Roberts showed some
stubborn and patient resistance, refusing to give his wicket away,
and top scoring with an undefeated 17 scored over the space of 23
overs. This is an example for some of the more talented batsmen to
take heed of. Snug comfortably chased down the target in the 34th
over for the loss of 4 wickets. Brian Womersley, showing that age
doesn’t slow a good legspinner down, bowled well to take 2-28
from 9 overs, and provided plenty of opportunities for the
fielders which unfortunately were not all capitalised on. Euan
Rodgers picked up where he left off last season, bowling 10
miserly overs for 20. A few positives from the match, lots of room
for improvement and we are expecting all players to go forward now
that the cobwebs have been dusted off following the extended
off-season. The match was Iain Stewart’s 150th for the club.
With
16 players unavailable this week through other commitments, injury
and the like, all 3 teams will improve in player depth and
strength in the coming weeks, and be looking to improve on these
mixed performances.
