Semi Finals - 20th/21st
March 2010
The
Longley Cricket Club played Huonville in the C1 grade semi final
this past weekend and progressed through to the C1 grade Grand
Final, to be played against Slab Road next week. With the weather
gods threatening to intervene for much of the day, the Bunyips
prevailed with a solid win and displayed fine form at the ideal
time, a week out from the ultimate game of the season.
Huonville
won the toss and elected to bat first. An early wicket to Heath
Direen (2-24 from 10) caused Huonville to take a safe and steady
approach to the innings early on. At 1-52 after 20 overs, then
3-61 after 25, Huonville would have been happy to reach the 9-173
that they achieved from their 50 overs. Zac Duggan (2-29 from 9)
and Greg Roberts (1-26 from 10) bowled well in the middle overs to
back up the tight bowling of the opening attack of Direen and Adam
Dentler (0-24 from 10). Geoff Woolley (4-38 from 7) cleaned up
late in the innings when quick runs were the order of the day and
Huonville fought hard to post a respectable score. Given the
pressure of finals, and the scare of the previous week chasing a
similar total where a top order collapse was salvaged by a couple
of unlikely heroes in the lower order, this was going to be a
challenge for the Bunyip batters.
In
what was very likely the innings of his career, and definitely his
season to date, opening batsman Adam Dentler (92) took the game
away from Huonville almost single handedly. With some good support
from the Bunyips’ remaining top order, Dentler dominated the
batting to post an opening stand of 40 with Jack Bishop (4), 95
for the second wicket with James Skabo (24) and 36 for the third
with Heath Direen (21 not out) before losing his wicket only 3
runs short of the target. Dentler hit 9 boundaries in his innings,
with many of the numerous scoring shots of 2 and 3 as good as the
boundaries on the damp and lush Huonville ground. Direen and
Daniel Woolley (3 not out) ensured there would be no scare at the
last hurrah and saw us over the line without any further loss and
the victory was achieved with 7 wickets and almost 20 overs to
spare.
With
two memorable performances in the past two weeks, our C grade boys
are steeling themselves for the final hurdle against a tough
rival. Our fellow club members will be out in force and watch out
Cygnet, because the Bunyips are coming your way! Go Bunyips!
